Halloween Scepter
Did this a couple weeks ago but I’m only now managing to post photos.
I already had the self-stick wipe-off board on my fridge, and I had created the grid for meals and ingredients, but it never got used. You know, the best laid plans, yada yada yada, etc. So… I decided to “upgrade” by creating my own Meal Planning Magnetic Poetry, in the hopes that we will find it more fun and will therefore actually use it.
Here’s a closer look at the ingredient magnets; I made some for a few basic ingredients, but I figure I can just add to them as we go– once I have a better sense of what we will regularly have in our diet. (We’ve just modified our eating quite a bit, which is part of the reason why I decided to revisit the meal planning board. That, and it annoyed me that such a nice organizational tool was just sitting there, under-appreciated and unused.)
Update: a cleaned-up version:
This is a terrible snapshot of this piece, but I didn’t want to leave my submission pending any longer. Will scan and post a better copy when I have a chance.
A Broad Stroke
This poem is a work in progress, and I don’t think it currently rises much above the label of “doggerel.” It was inspired one morning when I was reading a review of the “Degas and the Nude” exhibit currently showing at the MFA in Boston. I was excited to take Zoë to see works by one of her favorite artists, Edgar Degas, imaging bronze statues of ballerinas and robust women stepping out of claw-footed bathtubs; however, when I read that many of his sketches included women in “shockingly carnal acts,” I wondered about taking my young daughter to an exhibit when descriptions of some of the sketches revealed that, at least at the time in which Degas first created them, many were considered to cross the line between “art” and “pornography” – where ever that line may be.
Never the less, the exhibit has been called, “One of the most electrifying exhibitions to open in Boston for years,” and I can’t wait to go. And I will most likely take Zoë, since we’re not usually big fans of censorship in our house. Afterwards, I intend to revisit this poem, or perhaps answer it in another one.
Let me know what you think. And here is a link to information about the exhibit:

Perhaps a TGAP field trip is in order?
A Broad Stroke
Would you find it odd to see,
Degas create pornography?
Beneath ballerinas in dancer’s dress,
Legs spread reveal a pubic tress.
The review says Edgar painted
“shockingly carnal acts” that tainted;
Bronze, charcoal and paper textured
His work evidence of fingers’ dexterity,
When to the left of a museum peep
Reel show, trench-coat men seep below,
[pimped-out popcorn buckets in tow]
And cross the line at night between
Art and something not so black and white.
Together with my daughter
everything is possible

Gearing up for our trip to Provincetown, MA for “Spookybear Weekend 2011” – It’s a fun theme weekend down in P-Town. These photos were taken during last year’s parade. There were two girls (well, I know ONE of them was a girl) spinning hula hoops that had little lights in them. The slow shutter speed on my cell phone camera gave a pretty neat special effect of making it look like there were multiple hoops. Pretty cool pics nonetheless.
This year we are going with a bunch of friends, and I’m skipping the costume this year. 2009’s ‘Homo Depot guy’ and 2010’s ‘Jersey Shore Guido Bear’ are about the extent of my desire to dress up. What are your plans for Halloween this year?
So here is a new song I just wrote but I am still working on the guitar part, and below is a youtube video I recorded in FL before I left home in July
Relax a bit honey
This may sound quite funny
But you’re like a rhythm to me
Lay down in the sweet breeze
Put your hands on my bare knees
We’ll sway for a while
with the trees
Cause your like the sunrise
Creeping through my window at dawn
Wipe the starlight out of my eyes
And soon as I do you are gone
Don’t know why – time flys
Like a little birdy in june
All I know is I cry inside
Everytime its not you
You move me completely
And darling I love you I do
Relax little baby
You’ve come here to save me
But now it looks like that I’m saving you
From a life of pure chaos it’s ok you got a lost
I’ve been lost a time or a two
The point is you found me
And now you surround me
And I feel you in all that I do
So lay pretty baby with me in the daisies
It’s a heart beat – it’s a breath – it is truth
Cause your like the sunrise
Creeping through my window at dawn
Wipe the starlight out of my eyes
And soon as I do you are gone
Don’t know why – time flys
Like a little birdy in june
All I know is I cry inside
Everytime we are through
You move me completely
And darling I love you I do
Oh you know that I love you I do
I do
This is a watercolor drawing on watercolor paper. I used sharpie to define the edges. I have been wanting to color drawings with watercolors for a while and this is another study. I created a couple more that I will post in the coming weeks.
The scan does not do the original justice. All the areas that are White, are actually light washes of Pink (Red), however, my scanner did not pick them up.
Cheers!
Created this for my long time friends 50th birthday… Not sure why the thumbnail didn’t show up but I clicked it (lower link) in the preview and it worked 🙂
