OIL PAINTING

I saw something similar somewhere (wish I could credit the artist) and decided to try to recreate it in my own style.

HOME

Last month, my great aunt Teenie passed away. She was rockabilly before rockabilly existed. I now sport one of her ever-present, over-sized cocktail rings. I asked the family if I could have the tapestry of the bullfighter that had hung in her living room since before I was born. It now hangs in my studio, where every time I look at it, I am transported to my childhood, to that family home.

Chinese Cuisine

My dad married Yanmin a few years ago. She is a lovely, kind, thoughtful woman who moved here from Guangzhou, China. This past weekend, she graciously agreed to show me how to create some of her favorite dishes.

This is the “National Dish” with matchstick potatoes, chiles, green onion, ginger, soy sauce, rice/wheat vinegar, sugar, salt, and oil. She made it extra spicy for me.

This is a cold dish. Cucumbers, sea weed, and bean noodles with the delicious sauce that I’ll show next.

Start with garlic and paprika. Pour piping hot oil into the bowl. Add the rice/wheat vinegar, soy sauce, sugar and salt.

Dumplings! These are made with ground pork. The folding of the wrapper is the tricky part. Apparently, I’m naturally from Southern China. She tried to show me the Northern technique, but mine kept coming up Southern. Story of my life.

Spicy tofu, cooked a thousand times. Spiky meatballs.
