Here’s the most recent of my “kitchen projects”, which I finished a week ago but never got around to photographing and posting:
SPICE RACK MADE FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS
The “rack” is a metal tray that was my grandmother’s. It was one of the ones that had folding legs–a TV tray, I guess you’d call it– and when the legs rusted out, I decided to convert it. It is simply screwed to the wall.
The tins are from two flavors of Turkish Delight candy I found at a local off-price store. (Past their date, so 59 cents a piece!)
I attached a super-strong craft magnet to the bottom of each tin:
And attached a label to each top:
The labels were the perfect size circles for the larger tins; Mike helped me cut down the ones for the smaller tins. I transferred all my spices to their new homes, and as you can see I still have some empty tins with blank labels for when I want to expand my selection.
Deli Counter
My reassurance clenched
In my palm, a pink
Ticket – number 67 – I
Listen to orders
Of those who’ve come
Before me. Fat-filled
Luncheon meats, pounds
Of Land-o-Lakes American
Cheese. And the stench
Of seafood swims over
From the fish counter.
A cacophony of large
Levis, Vera Bradley granny
Bags, and impatience
Pushes me under.
This weeks geek is both a picture I took and tweeked, and a poem, inspired by the picture which made me feel like the light of someone magical was sneaking through my window and inviting me into a new and magical world –
Through the Glass with Alice
and oh the light with glory glows
to chart the path of sweet repose
ever yearning beseech my soul
to wind upon, to take a stroll
you temp me in your louring ways
to dance and drink and joy for days
to leave a world with boxes square
for circles vastness open air
I laugh I sing without a care
you slip into my window, take me there
