“Digital Space Collage”

This week’s submission is inspired by the collage work of fellow geek Kenia Cris.   Her submissions have been consistently stunning since the very first week of the project.

The original photo: Fort Williams, Cape Elizabeth, Maine, 2006

In keeping with my theme of repurposed art, this week’s piece required a bit of digging into the TGAP archives:  I combined elements from the space paintings I created in Week 15 with a photograph used as a submission for TGAP 2  back in 2006.

scans of "space paintings"

The space paintings were too large for my flatbed scanner, so I scanned them at multiple angles and combined them into one file in Photoshop.  I prepped the photo with a bit of erasing, adjusted the contrast/saturation/vibrance,  applied some lighting effects, and dropped in the stars and planets.  The Lens Flare filter served nicely for brighter stars, and I made a ring for one of my planets using a combination of the Render–>Clouds and Distort–>Twirl filters,  followed by some erasing, a noise filter and some contrast/color adjustments.   I’m fairly happy with the results,  though I can see a few areas where the collage is not as seamless as I would like.
