Week 17- Brian Weeks

Think of Laura

From the womb, I was trained to be a soap opera addict.  I grew up in a houseful of women, each who watched multiple soaps every weekday. Part of the bonding ritual was sitting and watching “the stories”, as my grandmother used to call them, and then talking about the goings-on in the fictional worlds endlessly.

For the first 25 years of my life, I was an addict. Daytime, nighttime, it didn’t matter. Give me big hair and high drama and I was there. Generally, I was a religious viewer of the ABC lineup – over the years the offerings included “Ryan’s Hope”, “Loving”, “All My Children”, “One Life To Live”, “General Hospital”, and “The Edge Of Night”.  On other networks, I also watched “Another World”, “Days of Our Lives”, “Search For Tomorrow”, and “Generations” on NBC, and “Capitol” on CBS. At night, I couldn’t get enough of “Falcon Crest”, “Knots Landing”, and “Dynasty”.

All that being said, I do not watch any soaps regularly anymore. I will, on occasion tune in for a special event, such as the “All My Children” 40th anniversary episode last January, or a snippet of “General Hospital” here and there to see an acquaintance from high school who plays one of the main characters.

However, recently, I was putzing around on YouTube and found a clip of my all-time favorite soap supercouple, Luke and Laura from General Hospital. Someone out there actually took the time to video tape the “L&L” saga from its beginnings in 1979, EVERY DAY, and then 30 years later, post them online for former addicts like myself.  This generous individual has posted over 2,000 videos in sequential order from 1979 through to the late 200os. (As of the time of this writing, I am up to clip number 136. One of the characters made reference to the original air date of Friday, June 13, 1980.)

The other night I was watching and doodling, and came up with the above picture. Off to the left, you may notice that I had originally written “Lucas Lorenzo Spencer” and “Laura Webber Baldwin” before I decided to color the entire background black.

For decades, ABC Daytime ran promos under the heading “Love In The Afternoon”. (Search YouTube at any given moment using ‘Love In The Afternoon ABC’ and any year between 1976-1985 and you can see some of the best of these clips.)

Suffice it to say, I’m hooked again… Because I was so young when the story originally aired ( I was still 2 years old on 6/13/80.) I have only dim memories but know I watched every day. It’s a thrill to see the characters I’ve known so well for so long as their relationship began.  🙂
